In the glittering, rotten court of Mantua, the hunchbacked jester Rigoletto mocks every man he serves — until one of them curses him back. What follows is Verdi at his most ferocious: a story of power without conscience, vengeance that misfires, and a father who will do anything to protect his daughter from a world he helped corrupt.
Premiered in Venice in 1851 and never out of the repertoire since, Rigoletto is packed with music you already know by heart — the swaggering “La donna è mobile,” Gilda's radiant “Caro nome,” and the Act III quartet, widely held to be one of the greatest ensembles ever written. Ninety minutes of storm-lashed melodrama, and an ending that leaves the house silent.
